Where to Find Quality Collectible Dolls

Collectible Dolls - Where To Find Them

Collectible Dolls - Where To Find Them
By Michael Russell

In this article we're going to discuss where you can find your collectible doll that you've been hunting all over for if you're a die hard collector.

With the craze of collecting dolls, the number of places that have popped up where you can actually find them have multiplied like rabbits over the years. Where it used to be that some dolls were close to impossible to find, now all you pretty much have to do is just turn around and you'll find what you're looking for.

The first place to find collectible dolls, believe it or not, is right at your local toy store. Places like Toys R Us and Kay-Bee Toys actually make it a point to stock dolls that are in great demand. You're not going to find the old collectibles at these places but if a doll is new and sure to be a hit or is of a series that has been popular for a long time, like Barbie, you can be sure that the latest addition to this collection is going to be at one of these two stores. And sometimes your Ma and Pa store will carry some very rare dolls that you won't find anywhere else. So make sure you check those out too.

Another place to find collectible dolls is at what they call a specialty store. There are many of these all over the place. Most of them usually specialize in collectible trading cards like Magic The Gathering, but some also stock some very old collectible dolls or at least know where to get them if you put in a special order, which you can do. Just expect to pay a bundle for something purchased from one of these stores. The markup on these items will make your head spin.

Then there's the local newspaper. There are always people advertising dolls that they have for sale in them. Usually a paper will have a special section in the classifieds called collectibles. In this section you'll find what the doll is and a phone number so you can call the person. Many specialty stores also advertise their weekly specials in this section in order to get you to come down to their establishment.

Finally, there is online. The Internet is a virtual paradise for collectibles. The main place that people seem to go to is Ebay. But you have to be very careful when trying to get a collectible doll from Ebay. Because this is an auction site you're not guaranteed a fixed price. The bidding for each doll will usually start very small unless the owner of the doll sets the starting bid very high, especially if it is a very hot item. But with many people bidding on this item you could end up spending a fortune on a doll that is maybe worth half as much. So make sure you pick a price that you are not going to go above before you start your bidding.

Other sites like privately run web sites may be a little more reasonable. The price will be fixed and in most cases will actually be below book value. That is the lure of these sites. They make it seem like you're getting a great deal, which you are if you're a die hard collector and plan to resell the doll down the road.

Yes, there are many places to find the doll you want. Just make sure you don't get taken to the cleaners in the process.

Ashton Drake Collectible Dolls

Collectors - Ashton Drake Dolls

Collectors - Ashton Drake Dolls
By Jayne Cremasco

27 years ago, my shop was one of the first shops to get onboard when the Bradford Exchange decided to open a “Dealer Division” in Canada. I am sure there was no one who had looked in a magazine in 1980, and not seen “Matthew”. People who had never owned a doll, or even considered owning a doll, were falling in love with the idea of doll collecting as well as falling in love with Matthew. Yes there were dolls before Matthew, but in my mind, he was the one that really blew the doll market wide open.

These new collectors, then wanted to complete the earlier dolls in the set, and prices on the premier issue “Jason” went crazy. I remember people paying up to $2500. to have the first issue in the Picture Perfect Babies Collection, Jason, and hundreds to obtain Heather and Jennifer as well.
So where did it all go wrong? Today’s market on these and other older Ashton Drake Dolls, is so soft I would not dream of selling.

Click Here For The Best Collectible Doll Auction Deals

It is my opinion that Ashton Drake Galleries simply made too many dolls. From their original 2-3 different series back in the early days, to having so many different sets of dolls it was nearly impossible for collectors to know what doll belonged in what series.
I heard over and over as sales dwindled that there is “only so much room in my house for dolls”.

Many other collectors had entered the marketplace to simply purchase dolls as an investment, and as the market continued to be flooded with new dolls and new series of dolls, these collectors changed their buying habits. These dolls have never been displayed, and have been carefully stored for the past 20 years. Add their numbers to those sold to private collectors and you will begin to see the larger picture.

For myself as a dealer, the final blow came when I received an informal letter in the mail, saying my sales were no longer high enough to qualify for dealer status, and I would not be able to purchase dolls for resale in the future. This was the quality of customer service given to a retailer of their product for over 20 years and having sold hundreds of their dolls over the years and generating thousands of dollars in revenue for them. For a company struggling to maintain a collector base, this business decision by the Dealer Division alienated a large portion of their small retailer foundation.

Now you have collectors tiring of the product and upset because their “investment” did not work out, and you also have your retailers upset over being treated so poorly.

I have many lovely Ashton Drake dolls in my own collection. I am a Diana Effner fan, but have others as well. I am not planning to sell, so their retail value is of little importance to me, but I certainly would call this the end of an era for a once flourishing company.

I hope that in the future these dolls will once again be recognized as the quality collectible that they are, and once again be sought after and treasured.

How Rare is Your Collectible Doll ?

Click Here For The Best Collectible Doll Auction Deals

Collectible Dolls - How Rare?

Collectible Dolls - How Rare?
By Michael Russell

In this article we're going to discuss exactly what determines how rare a collectible doll is and how its value is determined.

Collectible dolls are a strange paradox. The reason that dolls are collectible is because back when they were new, they weren't.

How many times have you heard a friend say something like, "I had one of the very first Barbie Dolls. If I had kept it I'd be rich right now". Well, the truth of the matter is, if every girl who bought a Barbie Doll back in 1959 when they first came out had kept it in its box and never played with it then none of these dolls would be worth anything. The reason Barbie is worth so much money is because back then little girls bought the dolls, took the dolls out of their boxes, played with the dolls and ultimately tossed the dolls in the garbage or gave them away either when they became too old to play with them or the dolls themselves simply just fell apart from use.

So an early doll that has become as popular as Barbie has become, if found in its original box and unopened, which is pretty unlikely, would get a lot of money at an auction. How much money? Last figures for an early Barbie doll are estimated at about $2,500. This is actually down quite a bit from the heyday of collectible selling when you could get close to $10,000 for a series 1 Barbie Doll from 1959. We have since come back down to reality.

But is this reality? The early Barbie Dolls sold for a few dollars. How can something that sold for a few dollars be worth thousands today? Well, it all comes down to supply and demand. If something is low on the supply side and enough people want it then the price is going to skyrocket. And for whatever reason, people love old things, the same old things that they used to throw away.

Click Here For The Best Collectible Doll Auction Deals

But it isn't just old popular dolls that are worth money. They may be rare because there aren't a lot of them left around. But some dolls are rare and worth a lot of money because there were never very many of them to begin with. While maybe not as many people would be interested in these dolls because they weren't that popular to begin with, the die hard collectors still go crazy over these items. So a collectible doll like 1967's Mike Hazard, Double Agent, will still bring in about $1,500 in an auction if unopened in the original box. Why? Because finding one of these is as unlikely as finding life on Mars.

Of course not every old doll brings in thousand dollar price tags. If the doll was in great supply but for some reason never caught on at all then most likely the doll won't be worth much today. In the case of Mike Hazard there just weren't many made to begin with.

There are those who will argue that this whole collectible craze is just that, crazy. And then there are those who's lives wouldn't be the same without this stuff as many people actually have built businesses around buying and selling collectibles. As they say, one man's peanut butter is another man's lobster tail.

Porcelain Dolls

Porcelain Dolls - Not Just For Children Any More

Porcelain Dolls - Not Just For Children Any More
By Johann Erickson

Doll collecting is the second most popular hobby in the U.S., and it’s easy to see why. Porcelain Dolls transport us back to our childhood and evoke memories that no other toy can match. We remember our first doll, our favorite doll, the doll we loved to pieces and the beautiful doll we kept on a high shelf. We remember the comfort and love our dolls gave us and the first time we realized we were too old for our dolls. But were we really?

Consider porcelain dolls, they’re the perfect collectible doll. With delicate faces and hands, they remind us of why we loved dolls so much in the first place. There are tiny, precious newborn porcelain dolls, child-like porcelain dolls in fancy attire, and porcelain dolls based on favorite characters.

Porcelain doll collecting can be addictive, and the choices can be overwhelming. There are artist dolls, made by hand in limited numbers; antique porcelain dolls, which are scarce; limited edition dolls, which are mass-produced but only in limited numbers; reproductions, that often attempt to duplicate popular antique or rare dolls; and many, many other types of porcelain dolls.

Click Here For The Best Collectible Doll Auction Deals

If you want to start collecting porcelain dolls, the first thing to do is decide what type of porcelain doll you want to collect. Perhaps Victorian style porcelain dolls capture your heart, or you just fall in love when you see a porcelain ballerina doll. Whatever type of porcelain doll you can’t walk away from is the type for you.

Once you decide what type of porcelain doll you want to collect, (and the choice can be difficult!) you’ll want to thoroughly research it. Knowing what porcelain dolls are worth and how to tell an antique from a reproduction just may save your wallet. But, like fine art, purchase the porcelain dolls you love.

Once you start building a collection, it’ll be hard to stop. There are porcelain doll shows to attend, new friends to be made, and more and more porcelain dolls to be loved and admired. But every moment spent on porcelain dolls is like spending another moment in childhood.

Collectible Dolls - Passion and Nostalgia

Collectible Dolls Combine Passion and Nostalgia

Collectible Dolls Combine Passion and Nostalgia
By Chris Robertson

Every woman can think back to her childhood and reminisce about her favorite baby dolls. Perhaps her most treasured dolls were popular dolls with ever-changing outfits and accessories, dolls that had long tresses that could be brushed, or collectible porcelain dolls handed down for generations and displayed in a special case or on a special shelf. These treasured memories are the reason that collectible dolls are so popular today.

Today's collectible dolls aren't necessarily antique dolls; more often, they're contemporary dolls that are, in essence, artist dolls - collectible dolls in limited editions that are carefully crafted by artists. Some of the most popular and treasured collectible dolls today are made by the following companies and artisans:

Adora Doll Company: The Adora Doll Company makes two types of baby dolls, those that are affordable and therefore accessible to many collectors, and limited editions that appeal to serious upscale collectors. Adora baby dolls are available in all races, eye colors, and hair colors, making them welcome additions for any doll collection.

Lee Middleton: Although the company's namesake passed away in 1997, this popular and award-winning company continues to produce baby dolls that have amazingly realistic and unique facial expressions.

Robert Tonner: Robert Tonner, known throughout the world for his award winning dolls and fashions, began his career as a head designer for Bill Blass after graduating from the Parsons School of Design. Robert Tonner has many lines of popular collectible dolls, including Mary Englebreit dolls, Betsy McCall dolls, and Tiny Betsy McCall dolls.

Zawieruszynski: Polish-born Zofia and Henry Zawieruszynski have won many awards, such as Dolls of Excellence and DOTY, for their collectible porcelain dolls that have hand-painted faces and human hair. These high-end collectible dolls are signed and are accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

Uta Brauser: Each of Uta Brauser's collectible porcelain dolls are one-of-a-kind and are so unique that they're often found in art galleries.

Nancy Latham: Nancy Pedroso Latham was born in Havana, Cuba and came to the United States in the early 1960s. Her collectible dolls, "The Wistful Children," are inspired by antique photographs of children. The dolls are costumed to represent these children, and accompanying some of the dolls are photographs of the children they portray. The dolls' bodies are made of cotton, while the faces are structured and covered with cloth, and then hand-painted.

Collectible dolls are a wonderful way to recapture the joys of childhood, while at the same time building a foundation that can be passed on to future generations.

25 Years of Doll Collecting

Click Here For The Best Collectible Doll Auction Deals

25 Years of Doll Collecting

25 Years of Doll Collecting
By Jayne Cremasco

The past 25 years have seen tremendous changes in the collectible doll industry. Until that time, collectors only had antique dolls, or newer children’s dolls to add to their collections. As there were relatively few “new collectibles” to purchase, the market on these “played with dolls” and antiques was vibrant and exciting.

There were many doll shows scattered all over the country, and a visit to one would find three types of dolls available, antique dolls, rescued discarded play dolls, and booths featuring doll makers wares. Doll makers were many, with their work ranging from dreadful to stunning.

Flea markets also found doll sellers, usually of the “discarded child doll type”, and many collectors searched regularly for collectible dolls. At the time, dolls being grabbed up were from the Chatty Cathy family, Chrissie and Velvet family, Patti Playpal types , Vogue, and of course Barbie.

Click Here For The Best Collectible Doll Auction Deals

With the emergence of the “Ashton Drake Gallery” dolls, followed by many mass produced porcelain dolls by many other companies, all offering limited editions, artist renderings and much media advertising, many collectors changed direction and began to purchase these new dolls.
This new collector market was huge for a number of years. People scrambled to complete sets of dolls and to find dolls by certain doll artists. The market on older vinyl “designed for play dolls” softened considerably during this period.

Home based porcelain doll studios, where you could take classes teaching you how to make your own dolls, also became very popular during this time.

A quarter of a century later, many dolls that were so popular, have now come onto the secondary market. Due to the market being so flooded at the time of production, and so many collectors jumping onto the bandwagon, the secondary market is now flooded with these dolls. The value on many has plummeted as a result, particularly Ashton Drake Dolls. Other collectible porcelain dolls that were mass produced are for the most part worth only a fraction of what was paid for them initially. The biggest reason for this is the fact that these dolls are still being produced, the quality has improved a great deal, and the prices have gone down. What reason would anyone have for purchasing an older one!

The market on genuine antique dolls continues to be strong, and investments made seem to be sound. As the years pass, it is harder and harder to find antique dolls unless they are coming directly from another collector’s private collection. This keeps the prices high. Unlike modern dolls, there are only so many antiques to go around!

For more useful information on creating your own wooden doll house, visit http://www.eloradollhouse.com You will also find a wonderful array of miniature dolls, furniture and accessories on this website as well. The Doll House Elora has been serving the miniature hobbiest for over 25 years.

Collectible Dolls - Great Deals Online

Collectible Dolls are the Passion of Many and Some Great Deals Can Be Found Online

Collectible Dolls are the Passion of Many and Some Great Deals Can Be Found Online
By Chris Robertson

Almost every little girl loves dolls, but many of us carry the love of dolls into adulthood. Collectible dolls are for those of us that still love dolls, despite our age. Dolls come in all shapes and sizes, and a good many of them aren't for little girls. In fact, some of the most collectible dolls are not made for children at all. Every little detail makes the doll special, and one of a kind. If you have depleted your local source of collectible dolls, you can turn to the Internet and find some fabulous limited edition, one of a kind, and simply beautiful dolls.

Porcelain Dolls

Porcelain dolls are one of the most widely collected dolls. The reason for this is that real human characteristics can be replicated with porcelain so that the dolls are very beautiful. If you have a great collection of porcelain dolls and you can't seem to find anything that will compliment your current collection, you should get online. So many online retailers and collectible doll dealers have some great items that are only available online. Many of the retailers online have one of a kind items or dolls that are completely different than the dolls that you currently have because they have resources that your local dealers do not have. Whether you are simply waiting for the collectible porcelain dolls that speak to you, or you want something that will take your collection in a new direction, the Internet is the place to be.

Baby Dolls

Baby dolls are a great collectible as well. Baby dolls come in a variety of materials and have been popular among little girls and collectors since the beginning of time. If you are looking for some new baby dolls to add to your collection, you should turn to the Internet for some great options. The Internet can also be an affordable way to start a collection of baby dolls for your daughter, granddaughter, or someone that you care about. Many baby doll dealers can offer you a wide selection of baby dolls so that you can purchase one that is perfect for you or the new collector in your life. The Internet can hook you up with all of the great baby dolls and artist dolls that you can imagine, and you'll find that there is a lot more selection online than you'll ever find locally.

Collectible Bears, Oh My!

Collectible bears are simply and extension of collectible dolls. The teddy bear is as historic as the baby doll, and that is why many of us begin to collect bears as well as dolls. There are collectible bears that come onto the market all the time; the hard part is getting your hands on them. When you get online you can find some great bears that you cannot find anywhere else. Many websites offer email updates and close up photographs of the collectible bears so that you can buy some great bears to add to your collection.

Collectible bears and collectible porcelain dolls are both things that many of us feel passionate about. One of the things that every doll and bear collector has in common is the constant search for their new addition to their collection. Many of us go months or even years without adding a new doll or bear to our collection, because we can't find anything that speaks to us. When you get online, you have instant access to collectible dolls from all over the world that are limited in number and can make a great addition to your collection. When you get online you have great access, as well as access to some great prices.
